Young Conservative Article
I’m Ben Cooper, I’m 17 and I’m a Young Conservative. I first became interested in politics at the 2010 General Election. I saw that the country had the choice to sort out Britain’s woes and take some tough decisions, or carry on with reckless borrowing and spending. It was then I knew that Britain needed a Conservative government! We were unlucky then, but worked through our long-term economic plan that delivered for Britain. 5 years on, the country faced the same choice again: carry on with the plan that’s working, or return to the old ways of more borrowing, more spending and higher taxes. In the Association, we selected our Prospective Candidate and worked tirelessly to take our message to the people of Barrow and Furness. We trailed many streets, knocked on many doors, and had many conversations on the doorstep. I loved the fact that we had the chance to make a real difference; not just for Barrow, but for the country. Many electors were convinced that we had the right answers to all the important questions, and gave us the best result for the Conservative party in this constituency for nearly 30 years. I’m proud that I was part of a Herculean effort that toppled Labour’s majority here from 5,000 to less than 800; but there is still work to be done.
As a Young Conservative, there are many opportunities to get involved with the party at a local and national level. The Battlebus2015 and Roadtrip2015 are just 2 examples of this. These were national organised events that toured constituencies, giving party members a chance to socialise but also to do some vital canvassing in key seats. There are also locally organised events as well as the Party Conference held in October. Just because the election is over and won, doesn’t mean that the fun is over. Being a Young Conservative gives you the chance to shape the future; the future of your association, the future of your constituency and the future of our country! I hope to see you soon.
