Barrow and Dalton Conservatives are fielding a full complement of 36 candidates ahead of the Barrow Borough Council elections in May. The local candidates have been listening to local people and have put together a six-point plan which they'll deliver if Barrovians vote for change in May. Cllr. Rory McClure (Barrow Borough Council Conservative Group Leader) commented "local people tell us that they're fed up of being left behind by Labour. Our plan for Barrow will put people first. Our hardworking local team have been out across the Borough, day in, day out for years now. They've been chatting to local people and listening to their views about how we can work together, to make Barrow an even better place to live."
Barrow and Dalton Conservatives field 36 candidates for the first time for more than 20 years. Group leader Cllr. Rory McClure (Conservative, Roosecote) has his say on the Conservatives’ plan for Barrow, Dalton and Askam.
Commenting after the statement of candidates was published, Cllr. McClure said “As we go to the polls for the local elections next month, our plan outlines the vision we have for the borough of Barrow-in-Furness. It’s a plan for aspiration, cleaner streets, a bustling local economy and putting Barrow on the map for all of the right reasons.
“We believe that Barrow’s best days are ahead of us, a thriving, outward-looking Barrow, with a Conservative council that puts people first.
“It’s time for a change. Local people tell us that they are fed up with Labour constantly talking and running the area down. As part of our plan, we will see cleaner streets, more genuinely affordable housing, a vibrant high street and most importantly a council that promotes Barrow and the borough to the World.”
Locally and Nationally, Conservatives back dreadnought, BAE Systems and the local economy. The result of this huge investment is seen in the ever-changing skyline of our town and local businesses in the leisure and retail industry and the supply chain all benefit from this Conservative government. We’d be ideally placed to continue to work with government so that all areas of the Borough can prosper.
Cllr. McClure went on to say “Local people tell us that they’re sick of cracked paving stones, overflowing bins, missed bin collections, weeds and dog mess. A Conservative council in Barrow will stop the rot so that Barrow looks it’s best.
“We will run the council more like a business, reduced the number of councillors from 36 to 24, sort out the waste contracts so that bins aren’t left uncollected and review Labour’s garden waste ‘stealth tax’ that they introduced in 2017.
“As part of our plan, we would also work with the government and apply for funding through the green spaces and parks scheme to enable us to protect and expand our play areas so that children have a safe space to play.
“And for the first time in more than 20 years we are fielding a full slate of 36 candidates, 21 men and 15 women, with the youngest 18 and the eldest in their 80s. You can definitely say that local Conservatives here are a broad church of local people, from all walks of life. We’re from here for here.
“With a Conservative council at the helm we believe Barrow, Dalton and Askam can achieve so much. It’s now time for change, to ensure this happens.”
