Cabinet Minister Sajid Javid launches
Conservative manifesto in Cumbria
Sajid Javid, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Kendal College yesterday (Thursday 31 March 2017), launched the Conservative manifesto in an event ahead of the public going to the polls on Thursday 4 May.Councillor James Airey, Leader of the Conservative Opposition at Cumbria County Council, welcomed the Minister to Kendal College saying: “I can think of no better place than Kendal College for us to launch our manifesto, the first outstanding college in Cumbria producing apprentices and high-level students going out into industry.”
Meeting with councillors and candidates from across Cumbria, the Cabinet Minister said: “Thank you for inviting me to your special day, the manifesto launch, and can I also say thank you to Kendal College and congratulations on your longstanding ‘outstanding’ status - it’s a sign of things to come.”
Sajid David added: “Looking at this manifesto, I’ve got to say, as Communities Secretary, I’ve seen many manifestos in anticipation of local elections and this is one of the best I’ve ever seen.“You are focusing on all the key issues that really matter to people; keeping taxes low, making sure you serve everyone, whether rural or urban, young or old, and creating jobs and growth.”
The Conservative’s ‘Putting Cumbrian Residents First’ manifesto includes commitments to caring for Cumbria’s children and families, providing a safe and well managed road network, securing and improving superfast broadband in Cumbria, protecting homes and businesses against flooding.A major policy is better and cheaper local government. This builds on the Conservative challenge to the Lib Dems and Labour who earlier this month put Council taxes up by the maximum possible amount permitted.
In a direct challenge to the current Lib Dem and Labour-controlled council, Conservative Group Leader, Councillor Airey, said: “Conservatives have a strong vision for Cumbria and we recognise that there is a clear appetite from the public for change.”
“The Conservatives would form a new outward- looking administration, working with central government to bring investment and infrastructure into Cumbria and to support the jobs and the economy that Cumbria needs.”
