Helen Newlove is a community reform campaigner who was appointed
as the Victims’ Commissioner by the government in 2012, advising
ministers on aspects of the criminal justice system that affect victims
and witnesses. Baroness Newlove, who sits as a Conservative peer and
is a deputy speaker of the House of Lords, has campaigned tirelessly
for victims’ rights, after her husband, Gary Newlove, was murdered in
2008 outside the family’s Cheshire home by a gang of drunken youths.
After her husband’s death, she set up a number of foundations aimed at
tackling the UK binge-drinking culture, as well as providing support to
young people. She was ennobled in the 2010 Dissolution Honours List.
