As I understand it the National Grid preferred option regarding new cabling is to tunnel under the bay and spend many £100s of million pounds in the process. This would I believe potentially cover the cost of a bridge which would give us all the added benefits of better transport links. I would go as far as saying it would open up the whole Cumbrian West Coast for economic growth and investment. A link road from Heysham to the M6 is being built at this very moment, what a great time to possibly link through to that new road.
David Morris the MP for Morecambe has called for a debate about crossing the bay, where such possibilities could be discussed.
Instead our MP decides to argue against the bay crossing on the grounds
that it may affect the decisions on the railway and A590 which were not on
the agenda and are totally separate issues.
Surely there has never been a better chance to make the dream of a Bay Crossing a reality? By working with National Grid the County Council and the Government there could be a real chance of having a bridge or road tunnel to connect us directly to the link road and the M6. At the least the cable tunnel could also be a future service tunnel for a crossing.
We must not be afraid to be ambitious for our area, after all if you don’t ask you don’t get!
